Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth installment in Disney’s Pirates franchise. “It includes, but not limited to” as Jack Sparrow once said, “Zombies, Mermaids, and the notorious pirate Blackbeard”, and a ‘supposed’ daughter Angelica.

The movie stars Johnny Depp, reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. The film also brings back, two personal favorites of mine, Gibbs and Barbossa. Apparently, though, it’s “out with the old and in with the new” because Will and Elizabeth Turner are now gone, which makes room for Philip (played by new comer Sam Claflin) and Syrena (a mermaid played by Astrid Berges-Frisbey).

The movie, once again, is about Captain Jack Sparrow on a quest for fame, glory… and, here is the kicker, youth. Jack is after the Fountain of Youth. Not entirely on his own, he is accompanied by Blackbeard and his long lost daughter Angelica (played by Penelope Cruz) which happens to be Jack’s long lost love as well. So with the love story of Jack and Angelica, and the love story of Philip and Syrena… unfortunately the movie gets pretty crowded. But with that in mind it still could be very easily one of the best summer movies of the year. I mean come on…you can’t really screw up when you have Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush (fresh from an Oscar win) in the same film.

The film is full of twits and turns and will shock you on several accounts. The film welcome’s new director Rob Marshall, of which he takes a much more, “choreographed approach to it” as he has said in many interviews. The movie is very fun, not as good as the first movie I reviewed (Limitless), but still a pretty decent film.

Quick Overview: Plot: 6.5/10 Acting: 9/10 Overall: 7.2/10
